It Just Hit Me

Tuesday December 23, 2008 • Design

So I’m looking at the best and worst new logos of the year and, of course, right there at the top of the worst is the new Pepsi logo:

We just saw some new 12-packs in the store today with that logo and, let me tell you, it looks even worse in person. I’m amazed it got bast the back-of-the-napkin sketch phase.

But why is it so bad? I mean, sure, it’s easy to look at something and just go, “hey, yeah, that looks like shit,” without any justification, but that’s the easy way out. No, there was something more to it, and it just hit me:

Yep. It literally looks like ass.

As I was reading a more about the logo I found out that I’m not the first person to see it this way, which makes you wonder, even more, how the fuck it got picked. Surely there were other candidates, ones that didn’t look quite so much like the stereotypical plumber’s behind.

Did someone in the Pepsi board room think, “Oh my, it looks kinda like someone bending over!” but not have the guts to say anything? Or, even worse, maybe someone did mention it, but the criticism was rejected by someone who thought he or she knew what they were doing.

In any case, it’s time to buy a blue Sharpie and head to the grocery store.

The Small Things

Friday July 11, 2008 • Design

Sometimes it’s the small things that are really nifty. At Target they’ve got these strips of plastic with sticky bits on the ends. They stick the sticky bits on large items, like bulk toilet paper, that are too large to fit in a bag, forming a half loop with the non-sticky bits that turns into an instant handle. This allows you to carry your large items easily, making you happy, and there’s still the brand recognition because the target logo is printed all over them.

Wonderful little bit of design.
